Edward Nigma started playing with riddles and puzzles growing up, of course, being a child...he cheated his way to victory on a puzzle during school to win a intriguing prize—which begun his gradual rise to crime as he matured. The presence of his father influenced his compulsion to hide the truth within riddles. His father presumably caught Edward cheating and beat him perpetually after the incident to force Edward to confess and keep him trouble free. The habit of telling the truth with riddles and turning to crime was a result of his childhood abuse.
Riddler is not deformed in anyway, but more or less, intellectual villain. Even when he is suited for physical combat and often has weapons ready for use, he has been the least violent and murderous of the major Bat nemeses. There was one story that showed him lamenting the rise of murderous villains.
He is unable to cease his “habit” of leaving trace within every riddle he sends or leaves. Always ending up in failure every time. He is unable to simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand, but prefers to put them in deathtraps to see if he can devise life and death intellectual challenges that the hero cannot escape. However, of Batman's themed enemies, Riddler's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle. He often has two female assistants.
The Riddler was the first of many foe’s to discover the Batman’s true identity. Unfortunately, with his obsession, he doesn’t want to ruin the best riddle of them all, the riddle of “Who is Batman?”
